A key to healthy (and happy) skin is to keep it at the PH level it wants to be at naturally. When we are born our skin is at its optimum state and has a natural protective shield called the Acid Mantle. This shield is made of a mixture of elements including sebum and sweat and exits when the skin has a Ph level of around 5.5. Problems occur when we use products that are not Ph balanced and often too alkaline. This puts our skin out of kilter and removes the protective qualities of our Acid Mantle. Most commercial skin care products are not Ph balanced and I believe the main reason for this is because the education process is just far to lengthy for their advertising or marketing soundbites. Also, the ingredients that make products cheap to manufacture (like lanolin, paraffin, mineral oils and petroleum bi-products) are also the ingredients that make it alkaline. Our skin is a clever old thing and no matter what alkaline rubbish we slather on it will valiantly fight to get back to the acid level it needs to be at. However, this can take hours. So… you can imagine the scenario. Get up, wash face and moisturise. Skin works all days to get to the happy 5.5 and just when its there you cleanse and moisturiser face before bed time so it has to struggle all night to get back to 5.5 again. All the time your skin is not balanced it is also exposed to ageing free radical danger e.g. sunlight UVA/UVB rays, pollution, smoke, water, toxins, dust and chemicals. The other problem with alkaline products is that they end up causing skin sensitivity. Did you ever wonder why we seem to be a growing nation of people with ‘sensitive’ skin. Often this is just a result of alkaline overload and stressed skin that would settle down under a Ph balanced routine. Whats the answer – easy. Find a good natural skincare range that is Ph balanced and don’t forget to use the whole range – not just the moisturiser! I know we’ve all done it. If you use any old cleanser/toner then the moisturiser alone won’t be able to balance your skin. So, cleanse tone and moisturiser twice a day for a month (the time the skin take to regenerate bottom to top) and you will start to see a difference in your skins sensitivity, strength and glow. Don’t forget also that by maintaining your Acid Mantle you will also be protecting your skin from premature ageing.
